Painting I
Livy Crandall "Observational Spoon"
Idk, Paint, Paint, 2023

As a midterm challenge, we were given cards to choose from, and we were told to try and replicate it. I decided to do a spoon because I already had a little experience with drawing wood, and i the overall colors seemed to be pretty easy. A big part of that challenge was to match the colors, and besides the background being a little darker, I think I did it a lot better. The hardest part was the metal bit and the wood. The handle looks like wood to me but I didn't match the pattern of it on the card. I like how the colors of the highlights and shadows of the metal parts of the spoon.
Livy Crandall "Open Water"
20” x 16”, Canvas, Acrylic Paint, Paint Markers, 2022
My idea for this painting came from wanting to paint water because it seems challenging. That looked too blank so I decided to try and paint some ships sailing in the water. I started by layering many blues for the water, and lighter blues for the sky. Then I took white to highlight the water and the clouds. I used many paintbrushes to blend and get the effect I wanted. The artwork has no deep meaning, it was mainly meant for me to practice and get my first painting out of the way. I want the audience to look at the painting and see realistic ships in the water. It was very difficult to get the sails shadows done, I think I spent around 3 hours working on the sail in the middle. If I started over I would use a different black pen because in certain light it looks very purple. The style of this painting is realistic because I tried painting everything realistically to look like they actually do in real life. I really like how all the wood looks in the painting and also the tiny ship looks very cute.
