Drawing II
Livy Crandall "Cerchio" 2022
11" x 14" Magazine Clippings, Glue, Tape, Paint Markers
This piece is surrealism, but there some abstract elements with the skulls and shapes dotted around the piece. To me the piece is representing the beauty in death and life. There is a baby and a pregnant women representing new life, and all of the opportunities that come with re-birth. There is also a man sitting seemingly stressed, and a person on their side looking sick and in pain. The title is cerchio, which means circle in Italian. I choose "circle" because the piece is sort of about the cycle of life and everything from the good to the bad that comes with it. If I started over I would have probably picked a color theme, but I do like the chaos of the piece that reminds me
of real life. Some things I love about this piece are how the skulls turned out. I like that the colors of them stick out a lot. They were also just fun to make. While they represent death and pain, they still look adorable I think.
Livy Crandall "Observational Ornament 1"
9" x 6" Charcoal Soft Pencils, Blending Stump, White Paint, White charcoal Pencil

This piece is realism, and it was made with Ms. Meyer. It was an observational study as we were learning to work with charcoal. There is no meaning to the peice other than for me to practice realism with charcoal. If I started over I would probably try and finish it faster instead of procrastinating. One thing I love about this piece is the highlights. The contrast of them with the dark shadows looks really nice to me.
Livy Crandall "Skull"
9" x 11" Charcoal Soft Pencil, White Charcoal Pencil, Colored Pencil, Blending Stumps

This piece is realism, and was made off of a reference picture of a skull. There is no real meaning to the piece, but skulls can represent death and change. It was mainly to see if I could do other kinds of drawings with charcoal. If I started over I wouldn't use colored pencil because you can't go over it with charcoal. I love the depth and the human form of this piece and I plan on adding a background. I could even just cut it out and make sure it is centered on a newspaper background or something cool.

Livy Crandall “Desire” 2022
9” x 12” Magazine Clippings, Construction Paper, Glue
My piece is surrealism because there are aspects that could be real, but it's presented in a way that's not real. For me, this piece is symbolizing the greed and sexual desire that people have for each other, and what the story of desire/lust can say about a person. If I started over, I would try and fix how the mod-podge dried because it dried with dots in it, but I kind of dig them. One thing I love about my piece is the yellow hands that were once typing on a computer, which are now grabbing onto a women's body. I also love the picture of Claud Cahun who is a french photographer who described their gender as “depending on the situation.”
